My mom asked me to give a prayer tonight, and I did it without batting an eye. I agree with Greg: it is merely a ritual. The message I sent was that I still care about morality (cultivating “good” habits); she knows I don’t believe in a personal deity, and my kids are too little to know what the heck is happening anyway.

      Thanks, Hermes, for your input!
I think that your approach works for many people, but I think that everyone has to come to terms with what they are personally comfortable with. I am personally not comfortable giving prayers, but I agree that is not necessarily a prescription to all secularists/atheists; it is just how I approach it.

I hope that you had a Merry Christmas, and please, continue to comment!

    This was an excellent podcast.

For those of us married to a believer, the question of prayer is not limited to larger family or holiday gatherings. It’s a daily question, for me coming up 4 times a day with meals and bedtime. My kids are little and the routine is still important to them. So I’ve really been stuck on what to do. I think figuring out my own secular “prayer” would work, at least for now.

Thanks Clay for your suggestion. Do you have a specific website that you like more? I know I can google it, but sometimes a specific recommendation is helpful to narrow down all the google options.

      Hi, Kim.
Thanks for your input and sorry for the late reply. Good luck at managing your prayer conundrum, I agree that it is a sticky subject.
There are a lot of secular grace options at the following website.
